2016 thank you’s already

We work for many months with so many of our brides and for some not so long, but either way when a thank you comes in after, it just reinforces why I love what I do and the couples I get to work with.  Here’s some from just the past few weeks……..

But to top things off, vendor kudos from some I have never worked with before, really are the icing on the cake……….

One dj during the event commented on how nice is was to work with a co-ordinator that actually co-ordinates.  He said he feels that most of the newer/younger co-ordinators are in it for the picture of the ballroom rather than the co-ordinating part.  After the wedding he sent me this

Then another dj who I worked with for the first time, sent me some lovely flowers.

Not sure who has it right or wrong when it comes to what I do/what people think we should be doing, but I seem to be more on the right side it seems.

Lovely Thank You

Its always so great to get a Thank you from a bride months after their wedding.  By that time I have thought they have moved on, I move on and then voila, I realize I have been on their mind, makes me feel so good

So I went to the PO Box looking for something specific and found this and it made my day.  It’s a handwritten card from a wedding we did in September, Teri actually ran the event on the day………………

Dear Lisa,

I have wanted to write you since the wedding, but the honeymoon, holidays, birthday, and even a car accident, got in the way.  You are among my big ‘thank yous’.  All of your hard work, effort, time, and sincere caring about the event made for a wonderful experience for Joe and I.  The day went exactly how we envisioned and it was so beautiful.  Everything co-ordinated so seamlessly and appeared effortless in the end.  Teri was wonderful at the function and I hardly knew she was there.  The suggestions for vendors were great, and we can honestly say we wouldn’t have done anything differently.

Lisa, thank you for making our day fantastic for us.  It truly was a gift.  You are very talented and we wish you the best.

Xmas cards


I am so lucky that I get notes by email/in the mail from my brides/couples during the year, and comments on instagram pics which keeps me in touch with them, and gives me a chance to comment back.  But Xmas time is great as I hear from couples from years past and I get to get caught up on other news from couples/not wedding news.

The card above came from Brooke and Matt and I think we both knew we would have withdrawals after the wedding, we had such a great time pulling their wedding together for longer than a year.

From Steve and Margo, a 2014 wedding, I heard about their travels and new doggie child and how great they were both doing with their careers.

From Amita and Raja, think they were 2012 and I have seen them at other weddings since as she keeps referring me on, xoxox) their card was the face of their gorgeous wee boy and the announcement of a new baby girl coming, then a month later a card came with the picture of their sweet baby girl who came a bit early, so good on Amita for getting her xmas cards out early!!!

From Holly and Michael such a great card collage of great pics of them with their lovely Lola/doggie child.  When are the real children coming Miss Holly??? lol  You guys are going to be great parents.

I never heard from Kathy and Keith after their wedding which was Jan of 2015 but got a lovely xmas card with two beautiful pics from their wedding day showing what a beautiful day it was and how happy they were.  Made me happy to see.

And from the McGettigan’s whose wedding I did in 2014, last years card showed their wee boy and this year he is a toddler in full swing, and a note there is a brother coming for him!!  Love it

Unlike your photographer or video where you have to have contact after the wedding, when people take the time to make contact with me after, because there is no need, it makes me smile really really big.  Thanks everyone

Vendor insight

A while ago a potential groom had asked me what made me different to other planners, well that really is not a question for me, I wouldn’t have any idea as I don’t get to interact with other planners in the capacity of doing our jobs, but more on a social or committee type situation.  So I posed the question to vendors who had known me a long time and others not so long.  What I got back was more than I expected, I wasn’t looking for love and adoration but I got that and my heart was touched and it kind of reinforced I am doing what I should be doing and what they see from their perspective in their roles on the day.  So I had kept that for me in case that question was asked again.

Then last month I got an email from a videographer I worked with on one wedding in 2015 and his last sentence really touched me, we sometimes have no clue the positive effect we are having on someone’s life/career.  When I worked at Disney I had taken the time after weddings to send a real letter to vendors we had not worked with before that did a great job to thank them for being a great team player and a dj who got one of those letters reached out to me a year or so ago to tell me he still had that letter and what it had meant to him.  So no matter who we are/what we do, positive reinforcement makes us all feel good about who we are and what we do, so I want to share the videographers email as well as comments from the vendors that I asked for so you get some insight on me and how I work so you can see if I am the right vendor for you.  I won’t give the names of the other vendors here in order to not alienate them with regards to other planners, but you can certainly reach out to me and I will tell you who they are.

Ceremony musician-Comparing you to other planners I have these notes – You are to the point/no chatter which allows us to focus on why we are there.  Your timelines are fabulous, they are clear/precise and a godsend as we sometimes don’t even see one.  On the day your instructions/ques are very clear.  You build cohesive teams and a nice atmosphere on the day.

Videographer – Your decorating skills are exquisite and ALWAYS styled to the clients taste.  Your timelines are always extremely detailed (down to making sure they eat), you follow up with every vendor several times making sure they know where they need to be.  Your professionalism goes a long way with the venues and guests.  You are well travelled and are familiar with destination events as well as S CA.  Everyone knows when they hire you, you get the job done.  Most of all, your kindness and passion for your ‘job’ is what makes you the best!

Band – Some of your main strengths above your peers is the fact that you have developed and nourished long term working relationships, not only with outside vendors but even the serving staff at the resorts you service (the love and respect illuminates).  This works as a major enhancement for all your events because everyone is on the same page and connected to the success of the event.  I know this to be true, your unselfish kindness is infectious.  I enjoy working with you more than most and look forward to each of your events.  If your clients are seeking someone who has the gifts of creating, facilitating their thoughts of an unforgettable evening I strongly recommend they sign you right away.  PS: Of all the jobs we’ve done over the years I have never seen a repeat concept which shows you have a gift of seeking the best out of your clients to personalize a special day just for them

Photographer – You make the most detailed timelines I’ve ever seen.  People know where to be and when things are happening – organization is critical to a successful event! I don’t know why more event planners don’t follow your lead on this.  You have a natural ability to calm nervous brides and smooth their fears and anxiety.  I have watched you do this on many occasions and have admired that quality.  Someone hiring you would probably have no clue about this, but it is so important.  You’re also quite talented at getting the best out of your vendors/team which early benefits the client.  Assembling and managing a creative team is more important that most clients understand.  Finally you’re very creative.  You don’t ever seem to do cookie-cutter decor.  I can tell you give special attention to each client and have really listened to them whenever I walk into one of your reception rooms.

Photographer – Here is what I think brides love about you – From the minute the bride speaks with you they can really sense your extreme knowledge, confidence and passion towards all aspects of a wedding.  Because of that you make the prospective bride feel secure she made the right choice by hiring you for their big day.  Experience is key! Since you also have lots of samples and experience at the location you work at that also makes the bride confident with you!  Your wedding day timelines are extremely detailed! The brides love that and so do the vendors! Staying current and on top of the trends!  Since you are always networking you get to see the latest and greatest which your brides benefit from.  And certainly not last, they all love your “New Zealand ‘ accent!  No one can compete with that!

Photographer – What sets you apart….. Best people skills in the business.  You are steady, confident, incredibly knowledgeable not only about how to do something but who would be the best vendor to do it, have impeccable taste, never any drama.. and are funny, … and did I say, no drama? The thing that stands out to me when I work with you are the relationships you have with everyone on the set.  From the venue to the busboy, you have always built incredible teams on every job.  I feel as though we are all there for the right reason and we would all help each other out however we could that day.  With newer planners, the vendors never know each other and it always seems to be just a job for the day where everyone can’t wait to get out there.  Definitely not so with you.  I love the feeling of camaraderie on your weddings.  Some teachers have the gift of making you want to learn more, some coaches make you more passionate about the game and build better teams each year, and Lisa makes me look forward to her weddings knowing they are going to be the most organized and beautiful events with great vendors and very happy clients at the end.  Plus, you know more, research more and spend more time on your business than anyone I know,  and it shows.  Thanks for the opportunity to say these things.

Dj – This is easy. I’ve worked with a bunch of different co-ordinators.  Some of them are easy to work with, relaxed and fun.  Others are great at “getting the job done” but usually are so high strung they make the wedding seem like more of a ‘job’ than a ‘celebration’.  You are able to somehow excel at everything.  You’re laid back and fun, but I never need to worry about that any detail will go overlooked.  When I talk to the couples who work with you I can tell they are relaxed.  You inspire the same confidence in your clients as you do in your vendors and that truly is a gift.  If you EVER need anyone to sing your praises directly please feel free to give them my number.  I can’t say enough about how great you are and how great your weddings are.

Florist – Easy question, hardest part is putting the answer into words.  I LOVE your honesty and no nonsense approach and how it is always done classy, eloquently, and effortlessly.  I find that events with you run very smoothly and that’s fought to say considering what we do … You are extremely conscious of your clients budgets and that is a HUGE advantage that any couple that hires you should greatly appreciate!  And of course I love your KIWI accent!  We love working with you!!!

Videographer – There are several things that set you apart from other wedding planners, but I will share two BiG benefits you bring:

  1. Your planning and co-ordinating process is impeccable! No other coordinator delivers a timeline weeks in advance of the event.  Most co-ordinators send me a timeline a day or two before the wedding and expect that I will have time to learn all about the day and adjust as necessary in 24-48 hours before the event.  We do just that of course because we have to, but the client is short changed by such a short sighted effort.  You communicate with each professional throughout the process of the planning to confirm everyone is on the same page all the way through so there are no questions and no surprises on the event day.  No other co-ordinator contacts me as often as you do during the planning process, you are second to none when it comes to planning and coordination.
  2. 2. You are not only experienced in event planning but you are talented with great ‘people skills’.  Many planners I work with are very likable and good with people.  Some are efficient and thorough.  Few have both qualities and even fewer have both qualities at the level you do.  A wedding planner is the Executive Producer of a once in a lifetime event, managing a team of professionals, service providers and vendors (all with their own needs, goals and agendas) AND at the same time personally assisting and fulfilling the needs of the couple, family and their guests.  That Executive Producer had better have a wealth of experience and great admin and people skills if everyone’s expectations are going to be met.  You have what it takes to be the top of your field.  Your success and reputation attest that you are among the best of the best at what you do.  Your modesty may case you to hesitate to share my opinion and observations with future clients, but I hope you do share my thoughts with every couple considering you and your services.

Officiant: I have known Lisa for over 24 years and we have performed hundreds of weddings together.  Lisa is very professional and highly regarded in her profession.  For me she is the number 1 wedding co-ordinator in Sa CA.  Lisa always gives over 100% to her brides and grooms in helping them plan their wedding.

Photographer/female who used to be a planner: I think you are absolutely wonderful! You are kind, quick at solving problems and finding solution.  You are always delightful and caring.  You are very meticulous and put so much into consideration for a couples wedding along with taking excellent care of the vendors.  You are strong, smart and fun!  You are always happy and genuinely care about your clients and treat them like royalty.  You can’t fake that!! that’s why we love working with you.

Ritz-Carlton sweet wedding

Such a sweet bride which of course then turns into a sweet wedding celebration.  Bianca’s colors were royal blue (which is huge it seems for 2016 so far) and white, so as flowers are hard to find in royal blue we used it as an accent where we could and it turned out just perfectly, we were even able to use the original RC chargers that we don’t see very often anymore.

We pulled together the perfect team for Bianca, thanks to Mc Cune Photography and thanks for the pics below, and to Peter/Vive Entertainment for being the best dj ever (lol), Design Visage for making Bianca more beautiful than she already is and to Karen’s Flowers for pulling the vision together perfectly.  Finally, to the team at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna for just being the best.

2015 thank yous – emails

What the heck??!!

I was doing so well, was getting the weddings blogged as the year/season started and then July hit and the weddings happening from then through October got me busy and my blogging stopped. I have so many great looking celebrations to share, so get ready, this has really been a year of lovely lovely couples with great friends and family, and visions that we started with that turned out so fabulous.

In the meantime, I am so fortunate, the thank you cards and emails have been coming in, so I am sharing some more with you below (all the originals are in my office), and I have gotton so many will have to share them over a few blog entries.

Dear Lisa
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! We seriously can’t thank you enough for all of your help getting this wedding done. You kept us calm, cool and confident these past 10 months and it made all the difference. Also, the big day was absolutely gorgeous! All of the vendors you referred were wonderful to work with as well, and did a beautiful job. I throw a lot of parties at my home and I want you to know that every time I saw you marching here and there across the venue I totally appreciated it and had visions of me doing that and it would not have been enjoyable being the MOB!! All in all we had an amazing day and have the best memories of our daughter marrying a wonderful man who could ask for more. We will miss you and will be referring you every chance we get. Take care. I am just so so lucky. I spend time with these couples, some months, some weeks in the build up to the big day, I can see how it is all going to be in my head, and driving to the venue I am always so happy/excited to see it come together. It comes together perfectly and we have lots of hugs and high fives through the night, and then the icing on the cake is these words that come to me after, reaffirming my love for what I do makes a difference in the end result for these couples and their friends/family.

Lovely thank yous already in 2013

It’s always nice to have couples remember you for how instrumental you were in their celebration. Here’s some Thank you notes I have already received from this season:

The wedding was absolutely beautiful. The wedding was more beautiful that I could ever have dreamed. You did a fantastic job from start to finish and I am so thankful you were my wedding coordinator! Everyone in attendance loved the band! We are from the New Orleans area and know no one in California. This fact made the task of planning a wedding so far away very scary and intimidating. From your vendor list I chose Lisa Simpson to coordinator my daughters wedding. I had to put total trust in her and I knew from our first conversation I had made the right choice. She put me at ease from our first contact and was incredible to work with! She not only anticipated my every need but connected me with the PERFECT vendors for both the wedding and reception. Timelines/how I work and Thank Yous

Well, I just got off the phone from a 3 1/2 hour long detail/timeline meeting with a bride in Boston (50% of my brides/couples, and some to all the guests, are coming from other states/countries, such is the call of the great weather and scenery of S.CA).  I mention this due to the length of time our call took.  I am very detailed and am known for that not only with all the hotels, but also some of the djs who consider my timelines overkill.  But in the 20 years I have been doing this, and as I was mentored in the hotel industry by a Japanese man and a  German man, their mantras to me were, it’s all in the details.  So when I tell a couple who are doing an in person detail/timeline meeting we may be 4 hours (shortest was 2 1/2 hours and that was when the B&G gave yes or no answers only, they had a restaurant reservation to make, so no time for digressing/chatting, longest was 8 hours and that was when I didn’t hone the groom in early enough,) or by phone 2 hours (most of the time we are doing these late at night after you are home  from work, so some have gone as late as 1am, if that is what it takes, that is what I do), no-one ever believes me and they can’t for the life of them figure out what we are going to talk about.  Then once we get going they get it, and then totally know everything has been thought out.  This year I had a few moms sit in on the details and this was their 2nd or 3rd child, and each time, the mother would leave saying, none of the other weddings whether there was a planner or not involved, had ever gone over so much of the details pre wedding, and they felt good knowing that some of the suprises or things that could have happened would not be happening at this wedding.

No matter how big or small a service you book for me, the meeting above happens, as I will never take on a wedding where I have not had contact with vendors prior for confirmation of services/timing/details, and I have not been able to create my timeline/script (normally 4-6 pages long).  All hotel staff know/see me carrying each page of my script on the day as to where we are at and that I am going by it, unless of course there are things happening that are needing us to divert a bit, and if needed, of course we do so.

Our detail meeting whether by phone, small (meaning the week of the wedding for a day of service) or large service, comprises of, the first hour or so is spend on vendors/who you have hired, confirming you know what you have hired them to do/finessing timing-your needs of them (then I contact each vendor involved to be sure they are in agreement-no misunderstandings), then we create the timeline/order of events, first the basic order of the important things from ceremony on (takes sometimes 2 hours), then I back everything  back and start with the hair/makeup beginning times-where groom will be etc, who/where for photos, all leading to the cere time, then it gets really detailed as to who walking with who, to what, etc.  At the rehearsal I verbalise the key times for everyone involved, if no rehearsal (which happens a lot now) I send a copy to you day prior with the key times/people indicated so you can pass that info onto them so hopefully they won’t be bugging you on the day) I give you options, you make the final decision (obviously the flow I suggest if you are amicable  is what I see as being the most successful, you can’t do weddings as often as I do and not get a feel for what the reality will be).  There is no right or wrong way, it really is what you want/are happy with, and I do guide you but what you say is how it will be is what we all orchestrate.  Normally what we put down during the meeting is how it stays, sometimes couples change it after they have thought on it, and this year I had two different grooms that re-worked it several times right up until a few days before the event,  and kept asking me what I thought of their tweaks, in both cases I did not feel there was a flow, it was a lot of start/stop, and I would give my thoughts back, but ultimately with both these grooms we used their order of events during the dinner/dancing portion (I think with some of these the brides have no idea how often the groom and I are corresponding/going back and forth), with one of the weddings, the groom was actually having an issue with the band they had booked (don’t think the bride even knew), he did not feel they were responsive to him at all, I chatted with the band rep about the timeline etc , he then became much more responsive to the groom (who thanked me for that) and in the grooms words the band rep ‘was very complimentary about the conversation with you and it really sounded like you had it all under control. To which I told him you absolutely do.’  In the end. this band rep was not a fan of the grooms order of events but went along with it also, and to this point due to the flow not being the best (again grooms end decision no other way he was going to have/want it) the groom became  quite panicky each time the band was not in the room playing when there would be a bit of a lull.  So do listen to the suggestions of your planner who is suggesting things from an overall perspective, to an individual vendor who is of course doing it to make themselves look fab and forget that they aren’t the stars, or that may not be the type of event you want.

But my point is, even with a  service that starts the week of the wedding, I go through this same process with you.  It means you have thought about everything, all the important moments have been incorporated, the people involved/doing anything have been told/know, and on the day there are no suprises from an orchestration point of view. and you can relax on the day knowing I know what is supposed to happen/when and will make it happen.  I am also known for keeping meal times within 5 mins of the time on the hotel paperwork.  Ceremony may start late, cocktails may go over, but I have buffer time in my timelines that covers all these things, but as the meal is what you have spent the most of your budget on, I don’t want that food compromised.

So anyway, as I started off, I just finished a 3 1/2 hour phone detail with a bride, now her event is 1 1/2 days so a bit more to go thru, thus the longer time.  All open items  are then emailed to you to check on/answer/tweak/change etc.  I do everything by email so you can always refer back when you have time and update me or change things, and from my perspective I have what you told me written down/know that I have covered everything with you/heard back on open items/decisions,  and can always refer back.  No stone is left unturned with me, believe me, ask your hotel person.  So feel safe and confident knowing you can enjoy your day, I am doing what I was hired to do ultimately, run your day with you not having to worry about anything.

I have been doing weddings for over 20 years now, first in my hotel life, and now 11 years independently.  I am referred by the best hotels in the OC,  since the day they opened (St Regis & Hyatt HB) or as with the Ritz-Carlton for 11 years, others have come and gone off the lists (as with my list you can be pulled off at any time) so that tells you a lot I believe, and that my formula/way I work suits the hotels and has meant many happy couples/families. 


I was in the office sorting some filing out on Friday, and counted up thank you notes and emails from 26 weddings this year/2011, thank you to you all for taking the time to think of me after, always touches my heart (I have books of thank you notes from all the years I have been doing this, I have kept every one, one day I will count how many are there, with email now it is really easy so they come nice and quick after the day-instand gratification for me!! LOL).  Some even sent me wee items from their honeymoon or make sure I see pics from the wedding.  I also got xmas cards from a few couples already this year,  some it’s their first year married, for others I am getting cards 3-4 years into their marriage, brings back memories.  I also came across an email that touched my heart, it  came in Oct, it was from a groom saying they had been in S CA during the summer with their 2 young kids, and it reminded them of me, and he wanted to check in and say hi (internet is a great thing for finding people that you would not have found otherwise) and let me know they still thought about me and had great memories from their wedding, which was …. back in 1994!!!! Wow. 

I have had couples call me from their 1 year anniversary dinner, and this year even had three couples call me when I was driving home from their weddings (so around 1am), I see their number and have a panic as to what the heck can be wrong I knew they left the wedding and all was well, and it is one or both of them on the line thanking me for such a great day/celebration.  Of course, I say thanks, but please, get back to what you should be doing right now, which is not thinking about me!!!! Oh dear.  So thanks right back to all of you, it really touches me that I have a special place in your memory/heart, just as you have mine.  I was shredding files from 2005/06 about a month ago, and when I saw the couples names was able to recall  things about their weddings, always seems like yesterday.

So lucky lucky, can’t imagine doing anything else and don’t want to.   And if you are reading this, then it means you have checked out weddings on my blog, maybe pics on my website, so you can see how varied my brides and their visions are, and that I have the experience to help you too, you are not  trusting all the money and most important hours of your life so far, with a novice or someone who doesn’t really care if they do this for a short or long while. This is my life and career.

That’s definately enough words for today.  But if you are looking around/considering a co-ordinator, the above info is the reality/truth of how I work, check with your hotel person if you need extra confidence, they are not going to steer you wrong, it only comes back on them.  Anyway, email or me call, let me know your date/time, how many guests, and how much or little help you are looking for from a co-ordinator, and I will email over a detailed service option for you to look at, they are in full and have pricing showing.  Then we can phone chat or in person meet/chat, and see if you would like to move forward.  I have a lovely office where you can  see tons of albums/photos of past weddings, and get inspired if needed, or at least see your room/site and get a feel or what you may want to do/not do, based on what others before you have done.
